It is important to understand that a CAT rating does not simply indicate the maximum voltage the meter can measure. Instead, it represents the meter's ability to withstand high-energy transient overvoltages generated during load switching, motor startup, or power system faults.

30 kA HRC Fuse – Small Component, Critical Protection

The Sanwa CD771 is equipped with a 30 kA High Rupturing Capacity (HRC) ceramic fuse.

If the user accidentally selects the wrong measurement function or an overcurrent condition occurs, the HRC fuse disconnects the circuit almost instantly, minimizing electric arc formation and preventing excessive fault current from reaching the internal measurement circuitry.

Safety Cap Helps Prevent Incorrect Probe Connections

In addition to its internal protection circuitry, the Sanwa CD771 features a Safety Cap at the current measurement input terminal.

This design makes it easier to identify the correct probe connection and helps prevent users from accidentally leaving the test lead in the current input when switching to voltage measurement—one of the most common causes of blown fuses and damaged digital multimeters.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why does the display fluctuate even when nothing is being measured ?

The display may show several fluctuating digits even when the test probes are not connected to a circuit. This is normal behavior for most digital multimeters with high input impedance.

When the probes are left open, the meter can pick up ambient electromagnetic noise, causing slight fluctuations in the displayed value.

To verify proper operation, simply short the two probe tips together. If the display stabilizes near zero or fluctuates by only a few digits, the meter is functioning normally.

Why does the capacitance reading keep changing after connecting a capacitor ?

After switching to capacitance measurement, the displayed value may gradually increase or continue changing for several seconds.

This is normal because the multimeter measures capacitance by charging the capacitor with a small current and calculating its capacitance from the charging process. Large-value capacitors or capacitors with leakage require more time to stabilize.

For best accuracy, always discharge the capacitor completely before testing. Using the REL (Relative) function can also eliminate the residual capacitance of the test leads, especially when measuring small-value capacitors.

Can the Sanwa CD771 measure 220 V AC?

Yes. The multimeter measures AC voltage up to 1000 V, making it suitable for testing standard 220 V AC household power as well as many industrial electrical systems.
